Our paid Externship program is designed to be very hands on. Our goal is to expose you to a variety of cases all while helping you become confident in your skills as a doctor. Regardless if you are a 2nd year student or a 4th year student about to graduate, we will make sure your experience is designed to fit you. We encourage participation! We promise you will get out of it exactly what you put into it. You will never be left alone and will be supported throughout your entire time with us. An externship is also a perfect trial opportunity when looking for a potential position.

We offer 2-8 weeks sessions. Based on feedback from previous externs, we recommend 4-weeks. However, if you are only able to come for 2-weeks you will definitely have a positive experience. We often have students who’ve completed only 2 weeks return for an additional time.

You are paired with a doctor and rotate through each department of the practice. Every week you are scheduled 40-hours and rotate through weekends, day and evening hours.

Outpatient Medicine

Outpatient Medicine is focused around daily appointments, including Urgent Care appointments. Each doctor is scheduled for 20-minute appointments and rotate through a block of Urgent Care appointments. Each Urgent Care appointment is scheduled for 30 minutes during their urgent care block.

Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine is an in-house service offered to enhance patient care and does not typically take outside referrals. Dr. Dave Burgerner, DACVIM, specializes in internal medicine, cardiology and oncology. Internal Medicine is located on our 2nd floor.

Our surgical and dental procedures are scheduled Monday-Friday. An average of 20 routine surgeries and 6-10 routine dentals are completed daily. Select orthopedic surgeries and non-routine surgeries are also performed throughout the week, as necessary. Surgery & Dentistry is located on our 2nd floor.

In hospital & Critical Care Medicine concentrates on hospitalized & critical cases and supports the outpatient department with diagnostics & treatments for efficient appointment flow.

We offer other special procedures such as endoscopy, ultrasound, laparoscopy and cancer treatments These are scheduled on an as needed basis. You will learn to manage hospitalized cases during your shift while working alongside with your paired doctor.
